Krishna Menon Memorial Govt. Women’s College, which is entering its 379th year, encourages the faculty to attend seminars, workshops, etc. besides hosting them. Most of the students belong to marginalized groups and, though students of this institution are no less competent than the students elsewhere, their circumstances pose a threat to their recognition. It is thanks to the diligent, efficient, and hardworking faculty of this institution that they are able to utilize the available opportunities with utmost care and dynamism- be it research or learning. The college has provided greater access to books, journals, and internet connectivity and acquired equipments to promote research. EDUSAT facility centre which acts as a Satellite Interactive Terminal through which students get an opportunity to listen to experts in various disciplines. More significantly, the English department is in the process of implementing Inflibnet, for promoting research through greater accessibility to journals of national and international repute and stature. As part of sharing of teacher resources with the community, coaching classes in Communicative English and Economics have been offered to the prisoners of the Central Prison, attracting wide acclaim. This is in keeping with the suggestion made by the previous NAACC assessment team, to make research and teaching more socially relevant.
The college tries to promote research, outreach/extension programs, and non-remunerative consultancy, within the available parameters. A Research Committee has been functioning in the college to promote research. The PG dept and research Centre of English has a separate Research Forum for accelerated research/learning. Almost all the departments of the college conduct annual seminars and organize extension lectures to keep abreast of the recent trends in the respective subjects. Student participation in research is encouraged to some extent in almost all departments through research projects that form part of the evaluation process at the UG level. For the PG program, research projects carry credit equivalent to a full course in the curriculum. The science Forum, in association with Kerala Sastra Sahithya Parishad, extends its activities in and around the campus by conducting science awareness campaign. The College has tie up with the local Krishibhavan. Industrial motivation campaigns have been organized in collaboration with Ministry of Small and Medium Industries (MSME), Thrissur. With a fully networked campus, internet facility is extensively used for knowledge-updating. With good laboratories, language lab, resourceful faculty, a well stocked libraries, the college endeavors to encourage scholarship and research among staff and students. The first issue of the forthcoming multidiscilinary journal of the college, a locus for publication of its research activities, is to be launched in less than a month. Since the faculty enthusiastically contributed research papers, it is hoped that the second issue can soon follow.
Promotion of Research
The Department of English was recognised as an approved Research Centre of the Kannur University with effect from 26 September 2009. The Post Graduate Department and Research Centre of English encourages the faculty members to attend seminars, workshops, etc., besides hosting them. Being a Research Centre of the University of Kannur, the Department of English endeavours to co-ordinate programmes and lectures throughout the year, and actively encourages faculty and students to attend seminars, conferences and workshops. The Department takes pride in having had five Ph.D holders and three research guides during the re-accreditation period. Currently, one faculty member of the Department is a Ph.D holder and another faculty member has submitted her Doctoral thesis.
The Research Centre in English has two approved research guides – Dr. K.P. Asha and Dr. P.G. Agitha Devi. Three students have enrolled for part-time research in the centre. The competent and well qualified faculty members have been the recipients of many awards and grants, like the Canadian Scholarships, JRF/SRFs, International creative writing prize etc. The Department aggressively fosters a spirit of enquiry, and encourages faculty and students to discuss, write, present and publish papers. The Department has conducted seminars, symposia and workshops, organized invited lectures and incorporated best practices in teaching–learning.
A Research Promotion Forum comprising of five faculty members with research experience and aptitude was constituted in 2010 with the following objectives:
- Enhance research activities in the Departments and among faculty members.
- Co–ordinate the Faculty Development Programme of UGC within the College
- Publish an interdisciplinary research journal
- Initiate more research oriented programmes

Institutional Measures to Facilitate Research
The Institution extends full support to teachers to acquire higher qualification and competence in their fields. During the Re–accreditation period, five of our teachers acquired Ph. D, one acquired M.Phil and one has submitted thesis for valuation. Provisions are made by the Government for appointing substitutes in FDP vacancies. Seed money for publication of College Research Journal is met by the PTA. Duty Leave to attend seminars/conferences is sanctioned from the College.
The Principal Investigator has full autonomy in carrying out research projects. The fund transferred into the Principal’s account by the funding agency is disbursed to the researcher as soon as possible. The UGC, Government and PTA have contributed jointly towards the up–gradation of infrastructure for new research projects taken up by faculty. Every year the College publishes an ISSN indexed, peer- reviewed Research Journal and conducts National and Regional seminars, workshops, invited talks through funds from the UGC, DCE and PTA.
Efforts to Develop Research Culture among Staff and Students
The Research Forum actively promotes research activities in the College. To encourage teachers, research scholars and students, interactive sessions with eminent scholars from both India and abroad are conducted. Lectures are organized to keep abreast of recent trends in the respective subjects, and to instill a scientific temper amongst students.

With a fully networked campus, internet facility is extensively used for knowledge-updating. The resourceful faculty, language lab, science laboratories and well-stocked libraries (College central library and Departmental libraries) endeavour to encourage scholarship and research among staff and students.
Students are taken on visits to research centres and industries to motivate them into research. Various Departments utilize students’ research aptitude and practical skills in conducting exhibitions for local schools. A multidisciplinary journal of the College takes the initiative to help in the publication of its research activities. The EDUSAT facility centre of the college provides ample scope to the students to listen to experts in various disciplines. The INFLIBNET facility promotes research through greater accessibility to journals of national and international repute and stature.
Students of the College have actively involved themselves in the translation of various books from Malayalam into English which includes an authoritative book on the theyyams of Kerala, “Mooring Mirrors: The Theyyams of Kerala” and the novels of the acclaimed Malayalam novelist, M. Mukundan and Ponkunnam Varkey. Students have also participated in various seminars and presented papers. The faculty of the college have also participated and presented papers in national and international seminars.
